Historical Map Viewer
A free online viewer for historical maps and archival imagery, shown as overlays on a modern map so that old and new can be compared place by place.
It includes 110 georeferenced maps from the David Rumsey Map Collection, dated from 1680 to 1922 and grouped by region (Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Oceania, South America, the ancient world and two world globes), and French historical cartography from IGN: the Cassini map, the État-Major maps, mid-20th-century aerial photography and First World War maps, including Verdun. Maps from the David Rumsey Map Collection are shown with the collection’s permission.
The page also has an Esri Wayback date picker for satellite imagery from different dates, the USGS Historical Topo Finder for the United States, and a Historical Documents tab with scanned maps from the Library of Congress, including World War II situation maps.
Use the search box to find a place, measure distances and areas, draw lines, polygons and buffers, click the map to query the layers that support it, convert coordinates between decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds and UTM, and load your own KML or KMZ files. It is free for personal use and needs no account.
